View Full Version : What about GPU price/performance ... by display size?

One of the reviews for the 8800 summarized things saying the 8800 is worthless unless you have a 24" display. This got me wondering why I can't find a chart that suggests the performance/price of a GPU against display size.

So where are the charts that compare GPUs against something meaningful to all gamers: what's the best GPU for my display resolution?
Without a 24" display in my house, I can believe I don't need a GeForce 8800, let alone two in SLI. My SLI 6800Us seem to be plenty fast on my 1024x768 14" LCD with a 60 Hz refresh cap. But would a pair of 7800s SLI be noticable improvement? How about 7950s Quad SLI, would they offer improvements on 1024x768?

What about on my 75 Hz refresh 1280x1024 19" LCDs? Is there any point in upgrading my 6800U SLI before I upgrade my displays?

Sure benchmarks are great. But a GPU bang-for-buck chart based on screen resolution bottleneck(with maybe a second axis for CPU bottleneck) would be priceless to most of us in the gaming hardware community:

Agree? Disagree?

I'd pay money for such a chart:
1024x 768 15" = get a GeForce AAA or two BBB in SLI, with a CPU of ZZZZ thru YYYY
1280x1024 19" = get a GeForce CCC or two AAA in SLI, with a CPU of YYYY thru XXXX
1600x1200 20" = get a GeForce DDD or two CCC in SLI, with a CPU of XXXX thru WWWW
1900x1600 24" = get a GeForce EEE or two DDD in SLI, with a CPU of WWWW thru VVVV
Would you?

not a bad idea, however, what would be the determining factor for each category? And would we not have to include ATI and AMD scenarios as well, some people just wont buy Intel and others won't buy nV. Which games determine the proper sizing to each monitor? Do wee seperate WS from 4:3?

Well, that would be a good idea, though no staff here has screens bigger than 20" I think. I was gonan buy a 24" a few weeks ago, but I'm holding out for the 30" to drop under $1000.

That said, I have used the 8800 GTX for two days and can say that it is a feasible card even at 1680x1050. It was way faster, and it felt it, than the 7950GX2. This was using in-game AA settings. Use the NVIDIA CP and it becomes more drastic. We'll have a writeup later, but a more accurate statement is if you play with absolutely every image quality effect on, you will see a difference. However, it still may not be a great value since the IQ gap isn't that wide.
