View Full Version : Is a 8800GTX overkill for my setup?

I am thinking about buying a 24" widescreen. Right now, I may pick it up only next summer, so all I have now is a 19" 4:3 LCD. My main video card is a geforce 7800 GTX. Would I be wasting my time with a 8800GTX if I don't upgrade my monitor?
Rest of my rig: Athlon 4000+, nForce 4 Ultra motherboard, 2GB of DDR PC3200.

The problem with this question is we don't really know what it is you want to do.
It's overkill if the only game you want to play is Solitare.
Of course on the flip side if you want to max out AA, AS and all of your other settings then it may not be overkill at all. You have to decide what kind of graphics performance you want to be delivered to you.
What is making you want to upgrade in the first place? Is it hardware lust, or is it because you feel that the 7800GTX you are currently using isn't fast enough for the games you play?

Heh, sorry, should have made that part clear. I am a gamer. I don't play too many action games, but I am seriously into Company of Heroes. Also a fan of a lot of medieval type strategy games. Recently I just broke my WoW addiction, but who knows if that will come calling again.
There is nothing wrong with my 7800GTX now. However, I have a co-worker who is willing to pay top dollar (based on current eBay pricing) so I figure it may be worth offloading now, since next year, it may be harder to move.

Right well if you have a definate buyer and you can get top dollar and upgrade now there really isn't any reason not to. But I will tell you that for ANY MMO it's not necessary to have a 8800GTX. FPS's usually are the most stressful on PC's. Games like FEAR and Oblivion and games comming in next get will make the best use of it.

I kinda agree. If you're happy with the performance now, get the card when you get your screen. The 8800 (or if there is something newer) will have dropped in price enough by then that any money you lose from selling your 7900 will be made up anyways. The 8800 is going to command top dollar as of today.
