Now that AMD more or less owns them, I'm just wondering if we'll see them compete with nVidia. I guess the title should be phrased "will ATi still compete?"

Yes they will still make video cards. There would be no point for AMD to buy them if they wanted to shut them down, they were 2 completely different markets.

R600 is moving along if that means anything to you.

I read somewhere that it's the embedded market that they are really working towards. I doubt development of dedicated cards will end, so they won't be pulling a 3dfx on us.

3Dfx was quite a different situation... as they went bunk.
Although it is true that AMD is working on a lot of embedded GPU's/CPU's, saying that ATi will stop making stand alone video cards would be just like saying AMD is going to stop making stand alone processors. The point is, the reason why they are doing that is to expand their market, not diminish it.

Basically it's just like what a lot of memory manufacturers are trying to do. Corsair for instance tried to make cases for a while (which flopped) and now they are making power supplies.

Just another way to add to the bottom line.

Corsair made cases? Seeing as to how I never heard of it, I guess that explains the flop.

Since when did Corsair make cases? I just googled "corsair atx cases?" and didn't find anything.

Maybe UnknownSouljer was just making a point, though I can't speak for him. I also googled with no luck.

Well it took me forever to back track and find this.
I hope you are all happy.

If you look at the article, it's true, Corsair didn't actually make the case, but they were working on making high end gaming platforms... They didn't really make it in that buisness.
But yeah anyway, ATi/AMD gonna still make high end graphics cards... and such.

The largest cash cow is the integrated chipset for the business market. Intel has always reigned supreme, so maybe AMD decided to crack that nut with ATI.

Embedded is another good reason for the ATI purchase. AMD can compete there with ease.
