Officials from Advanced Micro Devices confirmed the product delay saying that the code-named R600 has been delayed due to strategy-related reasons and a wish to address broader market segments.
“To better align our strategy with current market opportunities, we’ve changed the launch plan for R600. We are going to deliver a competitive configuration to market with an extremely attractive combination of performance, features and pricing, targeting a broader market segment in Q2,” a statement by the company reads.

which is worse, a delayed product or a product shipping but not properly functioning (won't look in the direction of the 8800 on Vista at all)???
I say its a smart move if the product would not have functioned as promised...

I have to admit, that NVIDIA and ATI have done a role reversal of late. NVIDIA drivers were undoubtedly better, but lately ATI has done a bang up job with theirs. And I agree with Brook, better to have delayed the launch and fixed the issue than release a flawed product. And let's face it; the big deal about R600 is DX10, which is of no use right now. I do have to wonder tho, will ATI keep it up? I really hope they do. They've put R600 support in their drivers already, which is a turnaround from the X1950 Pro launch :p

I think ATI (I refuse to say AMD) will be better off shipping a product when it actually is ready for prime time. I think they've lost a lot of enthusiast marketshare as it is so it's not like they will really lose more with this specific announcement.

I think ATI (I refuse to say AMD) ...
I don't understand why people do that. What is so bad about AMD? So you don't like their products, why is it an unspeakable name?

Yes, but it's different to say AMD CPU and ATI Video card than it is to say you "refuse" to say it. And no, for the record, I'm not an ATI, AMD,NVIDIA or INTEL fanboy. I've got a few of each in the room that I'm sitting in right now, and I like them all.
