We recently got a cheap AMD64 X2 3800+ based system. It has onboard video,so I'd like to upgrade it to a cheap sub $100 PCI-E video card.

Local shop has a Radeon X800 128MB card for $43.

The system is used for mostly internet, office and light gaming.

I am willing to go up to $100, but the card had better be a major upgrade from the X800.

Any suggestions?

You could probably get a x1900** card for around that much... if you're willing to go used or second hand... and yes that would be significant.

Here is an example on eBay:

Or you could go into buy/sell/trade areas of forums and see what people are selling. I've actually seen x1900xt's going for around $100 on some forums.

I have to agree. X1900 can be had used, but f you are still looking new, why not look for an 8500 GT? You get DX10 support, albeit so-so performance. Should be great for 1024 and lower resolution though.

I heard the low end nVidia cards are terrible for direct x 9 games? I think here, you may be better off with a 6600 GT?

I have to agree there. I think you're better off with a decent DX9 part.
