In Half Life 2, things are a bit clearer than with Doom 3. The HIS X800GT will quite happily run at 1280x1024, 0x AntiAliasing, 0x Anisotropic Filtering, while the 6600GT must remain at the lower 1024x768 resolution. If we drop the HIS X800GT to 1024x768, we can then add some enhancements, indeed 4x AntiAliasing, 8x Anisotropic Filtering is quite possible, especially when you consider that the 'Follow Freeman' level is quite an intensive level, so you should get better rates in the majority of the game. 1600x1200 is not something you will be able to run with the HIS X800GT in Half Life 2, but when compared with a 6600GT, you will find it can give you either a slightly higher resolution or greater graphic enhancements.

Unlike Doom 3, Half Life has many environments that feature urban textures and angles, so AntiAliasing and Anisotropic filtering do make a big difference. When the image quality is so close between the 6600GT and the X800GT, it really does become quite subjective to pick one over the other, but I’m going to go in favour of the 6600GT on this one; I like that the 6600GT’s image is a little sharper which with lower graphical enhancements, does make it a little easier to define objects on the distance.

Battlefield 2 is very intense for graphics cards, and we chose one of the heavier maps for graphical performance testing - the Songhua Stalemate. Both the 6600GT and the HIS X800GT refused to give decent rates at 1280x1024, bringing us down to 1024x768. At first glance, the HIS X800GT would seem to be better than the 6600GT, however the actual experience of gameplay tells a different story to the graph, with both cards being too similar in frame rates to distinguish between them. It is quite difficult to get a repeatable run with Battlefield 2 as pretty much anything can happen, and your spawn point is often not the same twice in a row. Suffice to say, the HIS X800GT can and does play Battlefield 2 well enough, although for online play (just to be sure) you may want to lower some of the in game settings to medium.

For Battlefield 2 I’m not going to pick one over the other, the quality is pretty much identical. Both have a good image, but the game really does benefit from some Anisotropic filtering; some AntiAliasing certainly wouldn’t hurt either. Unfortunately the HIS X800GT won’t be giving you any unless you drop down to 800x600, which defeats the object of improving the image quality in the first place; I might drop down to that resolution to speed up the game, but not to improve it visually.
