History
Since 1998, I've been eager to develop some kind of tech site. I wanted to do something different from what I was used to seeing online. I didn't want a drab, tech website, with benchmarks and numbers all over the place. I wanted something that a regular PC enthusiast would enjoy. I don't really care if the latest processor can process "x" millions of floating point calculations. I want to know if my image editing programs will be faster, and how much is this thing going to cost.
Probably my first contributions to the online community was in the video gaming newsgroup, alt.games.quake3. Because of the high PC requirements of the game, and the complexity of operating systems and hardware, many users ran into several difficulties with the game. Having gone through many similar problems, I provided advice to those who wanted it. Some case it worked, other times we'll try a different approach. I developed a FAQ, which was maintained daily for a long time. I exchanged ideas with many people, as well as exchanging Quake 3 benchmark scores. I am a gamer at heart, and as a gamer, performance and PC bragging rights were the key motivators in starting up my site.
So, Viper's Lair originally began life as Viper's Pit, April 20, 2001. I started the original site on some free web space my ISP provided, and I remembered waiting anxiously at 1AM for my first hit, after posting the news in the Quake 3 newsgroup. The site began to grow, both in content and popularity. It wasn't long before I realized that I was going to need more web space and a real domain name. Viper's Pit was taken, and I chose the next suitable domain name to play off my online alias.
Today, Viper's Lair is here to provide you with all kinds of real world, tech info. We hold nothing back here, and if something sucks, we'll say it. We're not here to sell you anything, and ultimately the final choice of what you want to buy is up to you.
So that's a small summary on the beginnings. Understand that many of the articles on this site are our opinions, and we simply state how we feel. We're not aiming for 100K daily impressions, and it's better to say it as it is, and lose sponsorship, than lie to our readers. It is difficult work, but so long as you, the reader, enjoys your time here, that's all that really matters.
Have fun!
