i currently have an amd 1 ghz athlon 266 FSB with a geForce2 GTS 32 meg. with that CPU, does it make sense to upgrade to geForce4 Ti 4200? 64 megs or 128 megs make a difference?

You will notice a difference, as that CPU is still failry powerful. I would go with whatever vid card you cann afford, and then upgrade the CPU.

The 64 - 128MB will make a difference depending on the resolution and detail level you play at. 10x8 gaming, I doubt you'll notice much. It really will depend on the game.

The article, although n00bish, was informative. It was a little surprising to see the MX440 bottleneck the CPU at this stage of the game.

Where'd you buy it from?
I'm holding out for the Radeon 9500 (Pro possibly).Who knows..if I manage to gather enough money by December,I might even consider buying the NV30.However I have a Willamette (1.6 Ghz),so that might just prove to be the bottleneck.

Dunno much about the nv30, other than the rumors, but I'll bet that card will cost a lot of green. I think the 9500 will make a fine card, assuming it'll be piced right.

The Radeon 9500 is prolly gonna cost around 170$ and the 9500 Pro 200$+.
And as for the NV30,fuck yeah that card'll cost a lot.I'm expecting a starting price of atleast 350$+ ,400$ at the most.

I went and did everything backasswards. I'm running an old KT133 with 256 PC133 and an Athalon 550 Classic, I went and bought a Radeon 8500 and a Samsung 955DF. The logic behind that was I figured I may as well stare at better graphics until I can afford to upgrade the rest of the system. As it stands right now the 8500 is pushing on a rope.

RDX - i just went to pricewatch.com and got the cheapest gainward listed that matched my specs. it happened to be from SRSystems in idaho! it's a stripped down card: only CRT; no TV or DVI out; ; no bundled games or anything. a card just for 3D games. i've had good luck buying parts by following links from pricewatch. got a nice mobo and chip; my last videocard; added some RAM. once from monarchcomputers; once from augustuscomputers. so far for me, pricewatch works good if you know what you're looking for...

So is this card must be OEM and not retail, right?
