66 mhz to 100 mhz

I recently aquired a celeron 1000 128k chip for my kids computer
it had a 700 celeron. I changed the cpu settings fromm 66 to 100.
It post fine but I get a windows protection error (win98).
If I set it back to 66 it boots fine but at 667mhz. I am using pc133 memory.
Any ideas ?

The motherboard only has 2 settings 66 and 100

Are you *sure* it is a 1Ghz part or did you get it used?

When I upgraded my duron 850 to a 1.1G duron it did something similar (it POSTed OK but wouldnt load windows) Maybe try to get a BIOS update for you mobo. My clue was the BIOS reported a 1.1G athlon, instead of a duron, maybe yours might say pentium?
My system wasnt that old, but old enough to be made before the 1G+ budget cpu's I guess. Maybe your mobo was made before they predicted the celes would go that high.
