TMPGEnc
MPEG Encoding

In this test scenario the two pair of sticks are evenly matched,
3 runs and every time there is a one second advantage to the SuperTalent
modules. Once again a surprise turnout for me, as I expected video
encoding to be where the 2GB kit should outperform, obviously
a misconception on my part.

The
SuperTalent 2GB kit barely held an advantage over the OCZ 1GB
kit, showing once again, the performance of Super Talent is up
to par, however the 2GB kit does not prove itself an advantage
here.
Overclocking
Initially
I thought I was going to have a problem getting to the rated speed
of 800MHz, much less test the upper limits of the memory. Fortunately,
the newer motherboards allow you to clock the memory at a higher
ratio as well as a lower one (manually mind you), allowing me
to fully test the memory at known attainable CPU speeds. So how
does SuperTalent stack up?

SuperTalent does a nice job of exceeding my expectations, getting
all of the way to 880MHz, while maintaining 4-3-4-8 timings. I
did have to juice them to 1.9V but lets be serious here, I put
my OCZ modules at 2.0+V frequently (I must note however that the
OCZ heat spreaders are much more substantial then those SuperTalent
uses, of course there is yet to be proof of any value to overclocking
performance, I digress however).
Final
Words
We've
covered the 1GB to 2GB debate before and needless to say there
is no application demanding reason at this time to dump your current
kit for a 2GB one if you're satisfied with the performance. However,
we here at VL are not the types to settle for a software manufacturer's
recommended ram requirements. Our general rule is whatever they
say you should have, double it.
If
your looking at an entirely new solution, and when it comes down
to a memory decision between 1GB or 2GB, it is better to error
on the side of, it might not be required today, but you know within
12 months there is going to be an advantage to having it.
Although
I have been running on 2GB for only a short time, I have yet to
run across a situation where I noticed an improvement over 1GB,
that being said, I rarely wait for my machine to finish anything;
I have 2 others I am doing things on at the same time.
Overclocking
was nothing short of impressive, tight timings and speeds that
my CPU, currently on air, can not match at a 1:1 setting, giving
me some head room for the next cooling solution.
It
appears as though SuperTalent
not only brings a 2GB kit to market, they bring one that can compete
with 1GB kits toe to toe! While SuperTalent is not exactly a household
name today, they pair high quality chips with an extreme quality
control commitment to do so; If they keep this up, they will be.
