HIS X850XT IceQ II
Turbo: The #2 VPU from ATI is packaged into an offering
from HIS. How will it fare against the X850XT-PE? |

This game is not only intense, it is mouth dropping beautiful
when using a card that can render it properly at high resolutions.

Although
it would be near impossible for you to recreate my exact sample,
it does assist us in getting a real life look into how well
(or not) the X850XT performs. As you can see, even though our
average frame rate is at the 60 mark, there are several dips
throughout the 2 minute run, dropping into the 30's at 1600x1200
resolution.

The
ability to play D3 at 1280x1024 using HQ while maintaining high
frame rates is exhilarating. Not that the story got any better,
just the physical aspects of being able to avoid shots and play
to your ability, not the inability of the card you are using.

HL2 is nothing short of abusive on this particular level, even
to these high end cards. Interesting enough, AA / AF does not
affect frame rate in HL2 overly much.

We
get several hits, and for lengthy periods below 60 FPS, in fact
the X850XT doesn't even make it past 60 FPS. The good news here
is this is at 1280x1024 and 1600x1200, if you play at 1024x768
you should be floating in the 60 FPS heaven without a tweak
and with AntiAliasing/Anisotropic filtering. Of course this
is one of the most intense levels in the game and 1280x1024
will be more playable in the more forgiving levels.

The
latest addition to the VL review list is not only pretty, it's
the one game that makes the X850XT cringe, albeit not the entire
time (as my midrange card would do), but noticeable hiccups and
stutters can be seen. This one might be better played in the 1024x768
realm if you want all the graphics turned on, and with HL2, you
would be crazy not to want to turn them on.
