MSI G4Ti4200-TD8X64: MSI has come a long way from just being another motherboard manufacturer. They've expanded into several markets now, including servers and multimedia. Today we'll be looking at their latest video card, the Ti4200-TD8X64.

Benchmarking

Unfortunately, my motherboard does not support an 8X AGP bus, I will only be able to test this card as if it was a 4X AGP card with 128 Mb of RAM.

For testing, I will be using my home system:
Zalman 300 Watt PSU
Abit KR7A-Raid Motherboard
Athlon XP 1700+ with Vantec cooler and Delta Fan
512 Mb of PC2100 Cas2 Crucial ram, 1T, 4-way interleave
Sound Blaster Live! Platinum (Disabled for these tests)
Standard 10/100 Ethernet card

AGP Settings:
AGP Bandwidth: 128 Mb
AGP Speed: 4x

Given the power of the modern video card, we're dropping all tests of below 1024x768. The comparison model here is the MSI Geforce4 Ti4200 VTD64, which I reviewed here. For the UT2003 benchmarks, we'll be testing against Gainward's Ti4200. First, let's start with the standard card, out of the box, and No Anti Aliasing:

3D Mark 2001 SE

A well known synthetic benchmark, we use it here for our Direct3D tests, as there aren't really many Direct3D benchmark programs we like that much. Add to the fact that you can compare yourself with other users add to it's value.

Quake 3 Arena

id Software's last game engine has spawned several excellent games since the release of Quake 3: Arena a few years ago. It's getting a little old, but many still use it as a measure of a video card's OpenGL performance.

Return To Castle Wolfenstein

Grey Matter licensed the Quake engine to revive a classic. Return to Castle Wolfenstein uses a heavily modified Quake engine (it's actually modified Team Arena code), and therefore demands a more robust system to maintain Quake 3 framerates.

UT2003

If you're a serious action gamer, you've probably given Unreal Tournament 2003 a try. It's a real system killer, and can bring many pre-2002 killer rigs to its knees. We used the scripts written by , which are excellent tools in testing various resolutions and detail levels…

UT2003 DM-Antalus

UT2003 CTF-Citadel

In the stock speed, no anti aliasing tests, the VTD8X performed better than it's 64 Mb cousin, showing that the extra 64 Mb of ram does in fact boost the cards' performance.

Now, on to 2 sample, as well as 4 sample Anti Aliasing tests...
