I'm really behind on PC gaming. Currently I'm playing through Quake 4 for the first time. I got through FEAR late last year.
With any luck this game will add some interesting new things to the game. I had some criticisms about the first game that I hope get resolved. Some examples are the lack of interesting terrain changes and most of the time FEAR ops for claustrophobic close combat. Additionally many of the rooms/levels make no logical sense and any architect with half a brain wouldn't have designed a building like that. I constantly kept on wondering why there were nice office spaces in the middle of a hallway with absolutely nothing around it, and the surrounding rooms being open water pump areas or similar. If I had the time I would screen shot some of what I'm talking about. Additionally I think the game could have been more scary with more story and more interactiveness. So far Quake 4 doesn't have these flaws. I like the level design, and I think the environments are more interesting. The feel of the 'campaign' feels hyper-realistic and it has just the right amount of being able to do 'the impossible' to make the player feel like a hero while maintaining solid mechanics and story to make the game not feel like it's covered with cheese. Probably the first truly great ID game since Quake 2.
