7900GT or X1900GT

Just wondering if anyone has any advice here. Looking to pickup something for my aging box and both seem pretty attractive in terms of price. I've always been with ATI, so I'm nervous about jumping to nVidia. I do play games, but mostly sport games. It says on a lot of boxes that it's best with nVidia (EA Sports) but will it play well on ATI?

The only two cards I recommend getting at the moment are the MSI 7600GT and 7900GT HD Edition cards. They are the only cards that output HDCP, so you wont be buying another card in 6 months to a year, and they perform better than their ATi counterparts.

I thought HDCP is a crock right now? That's what I read at Firingsquad a while ago.

I used to be an ATI fanboy, but yeah, Nvidia has been winning me over lately.

Yeah, it used to be a crock, it is no longer a crock, but you have to get the correct wording, HDCP Ready is what you are looking for, not that HDCP Compliant stuff that has been out for 3 years...

7900gt vs 1900gt head to head with no plans for a multi GPU solution I would take the 7900gt.
If it was 7900gt vs 1900xt I would take the 1900xt.

For multi GPU solutions I would go nVidia SLi for two reasons. No pass through cable, and I like nVidia's motherboard chipsets more than anything ATi is doing in that arena (for now).

For the most part I like ATi for single card solutions, and nVidia for multi card solutions.

Wow Uknown, I actually am liking the Intel chipset (975x) more then the NF chipsets for dual video cards. Of course I don't speak from 19oo series experience, just a couple of x16's...

The ATI was not bad either, and with out of the box AM2 support for the RD580, was a nice solution.

All in all however, the Intel chipset with C2D CPU support and the HD audio spec'd in them, it's tough to top em

What do you think of the 590 SLI for the Intel CPU? I think that has Core 2 Duo support? Happens I am in the market for an Intel board also.

From what I've read, performance is like the previous nforce for Intel except with more CPU support.

There are other features, but yeah, don't expect a big diff in performance. Unless you have 7900 GTX cards, the only real item you'll gain from the 590 SLI is LinkBoost.
