On My Mind (Re:WD HDD)
So I've found myself finally finishing my home fileserver.
Now the geek in me is yelling "Get the 1.5TB drives and build both RAID5 arrays." I will admit having about 9TB of storage does make me want drool, My logical side (you know the cheap tight-wad one) screams "You don't need it, build one array and use smaller disks. Build the other when you need it." I do agree with my logical side. So I started looking at Seagate 500GB drives, only to see the "bricking" issues they have been having. Back to Western Digital I go. After noticing the WD 500GB drive uses two 320GB platters, an Idea came to mind forcing me to run some numbers. A 320GB platter = 160GB per side 160GB x 3sides = 480GB. But the drive is 500GB, this means you have to access the fourth side for the last 20GB. So now I'm thinking if you have both sides of both 320B platters being accessed to make 500GB then you should be able to install aftermarket firmware and access the full 640GB. I wish I knew more about hard drives. ![]()
