ATI Radeon X850XT-Platinum Edition:
ATI's fastest video card makes its way into our labs. Does
the performance increase justify the upgrade? |

It just goes to show you that there is more to gaming than just
benchmarks as the average framerates seem to be the same more
or less across both video cards. In the run of the Rebellion map,
the X800XT dropped below 20fps a couple times, while the X850XT-PE
did so just once. Overall, at 1600x1200, the X850XT was a bit
more consistent.

There is quite an improvement moving from leaving
the aliasing as is, and enabling AntiAliasing. The effect has
less of an impact on outdoor areas, but indoors is quite noticeable.

Again, don't be too fooled by the average results. The framerates
did jump all over the place depending on how much action was going
on. There are a lot of effects here as we had 32 players firing
weapons all over the place, but overall we found 1280x1024 without
AA/AF enabled to provide the best experience.

Like Far Cry, enabling AntiAliasing in UT2004 will result in
much smoother lines on many of the structures in the map. Unlike
Far Cry, I didn't notice much improvement indoors, but much more
so outdoors.
